Gladstone Ports Corporation Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race 2025



Sailonline is thrilled to once again partner with the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club to bring you the official virtual edition of the iconic Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race — one of Australia's most prestigious offshore sailing events, held every year over the Easter weekend!

First raced in 1949, the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race is steeped in tradition and challenge. The 308-nautical-mile course tracks Queensland’s breathtaking coastline and demands a perfect blend of tactical mastery, endurance, and seamanship. It attracts a wide range of competitors — from elite professionals to passionate amateurs — and now, you can take the helm and compete from anywhere in the world!

The race on Sailonline will open for practice sailing on 14 April at 01:00 UTC, giving you plenty of time to familiarize yourself with the course, refine your strategy, and prepare for the challenge ahead.

The virtual race will officially start at 01:00 UTC on Friday, 18 April 2025, in perfect sync with the real-world fleet. You'll be racing a Cookson 50, a high-performance offshore yacht built for speed, precision, and tactical finesse. Even better, you'll sail alongside the real boats, whose positions will be visible on the Sailonline platform in real time!

And for those who want to soak in the atmosphere, don’t miss the live broadcast of the race start, streamed live by the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club! The live stream begins at 00:00 UTC (10:00 am AEST) on Friday, 18 April 2025 on their official YouTube channel here!

Regata dell’Accademia Navale 2025

Sailonline is honoured to have been invited to be the online racing partner of the Livorno International Sailing Week , organized by the City of Livorno, in cooperation with the local yacht clubs and the Italian Navy and to, for the very first time, host the online version of the Settimana’s flagship offshore race, the 630nm Regata dell’Accademia Navale .

The RAN 630 is a tricky race in often fickle winds across the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The race starts and finishes in Livorno and the triangular course takes competitors from there to a mark off Porto Cervo, then to Capri and home again.

New joiner to SOL AleBerny’s Class 40, Vaquita, should have competed in the real-life race, but unfortunately he has been inconvenienced. Instead, he will substitute his Akiliari-built, Marc Lombard design with a Sailonline Class 40, which will also be the yacht of choice for the rest of the virtual fleet!

The Sailonline virtual race will open for practice on April 17, to allow all new-comers plenty of time to learn the ropes so as to be competitive, before the start online on April 25 at 16:00 UTC.

Commentary

Eighty-eight SOLers assembled their DNs on the ice of Lake Ladoga near the hamlet of Vladimirovkaat on a crisp, sunny Sunday morning, March 10, and at 0900 UTC (noon local) more than seventy were sprinting hard over the ice and hopping in for a close-hauled blast out to Vallaam island.

Round Vallaam and heading for home, the leading contenders were mere seconds apart, but with the true wind now from abaft ( but the apparent still icy straight in our face), one SOLer found that bit of extra pressure by sailing a shallow arc against rather than with the veering wind availing of the no-PL feature of the DN by changing his CC course at very regular intervals (so he explained).

Yes, it was bonknhoot, who on this occasion in a time 02:14:54 took the gun, with vida and sassy63 only 4 respectively 5 seconds astern. Well done podium, and well done all the seventy finishers.

Commentary

In our "Jester" race 109 singlehanded sailors started and 98 finished it. Although everyone started in the same class of boats prepared in the same way, navigation skills were individual. In our case, the time to complete the route also mattered. It seems that the best navigators were Patrick70119, WRmirekd and YANN. The last to finish was chilli_simbone, 5 days 11 hours 5 minutes and 11 seconds behind Patrick70119, but he also deserves congratulations for finishing the race.

Sinbad by Balloon 2025 - Toamasina to Baia de l'Oiseau


You may recall that when last we visited Madagascar in the company of Sinbad, the Sultan commanded our intrepid inspirator to seek out fabled islands where in Summer the sun barely set. We did and we returned but the Sultan wasn’t happy with Sinbad’s report, so here we go again, now by SOL Balloon instead of sailing vessel. Expect to be in the air for at least 2100nm and depending on how the wind brings us, anything between two weeks and two months before we shall descend at the Sultan’s given coordinates!

Melbourne Osaka Cup Double-Handed Yacht Race 2025

Welcome once again to what these days is Sailonline’s almost annual virtual Melbourne to Osaka Yacht Race. In real life, this double-handed 5500 nm race between these two sister cities, one deep in the southern hemisphere, the other high in the northern hemisphere, is run every four to five years, and this year is such a year. So, this year’s online version is in sync with the Melbourne Osaka Cup 2025 organised by the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria (ORCV), and the Sandringham (SYC) and Osaka Hokko (OHYC) yacht clubs. We’ll be racing the well-known First 40, a popular size of boat which should be a good match for many of the boats entered in the real race. With the doldrums unavoidably lying across our course, you can expect to be at virtual sea for at least a month!
